SEND Overview

From September 2014, it is a legal requirement for Local Authorities to publish information about provision they expect to be available in their area for children and young people from 0-25 years who have Special Educational Needs and Disability. Local authorities must also publish provision they expect to be available outside their area which will be used by children and young people for whom they are responsible.

Supported by the Local Authority, schools are also required to publish a Special Needs Information Report which will explain their approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disability to ensure that regardless of their specific needs they make the best possible progress in school.

At St Joseph’s, there is a team approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disability. Every teacher is responsible and accountable for all pupils progress and attainment in their class. All staff work together supported by senior leaders and the SENCO to ensure all pupils are provided with first quality teaching and where necessary addiitonal resources and support to ensure that they make at least good progress.

Mrs O’Meara is the school Special Educational Needs and Disability Coordinator, supported by Mrs Rabbett who has had over seven years’ experience as SENCO in the past. Mrs O’Meara is responsible for managing pupils overall wellbeing and ensuring that specialist teaching is provided by teachers, a team of teaching assistants and Special Educational Needs Assistants who support pupils who have Special Educational Needs and/or disabilities.
